November, ‘26. Studio and Home life

Home

The last 18 months I’ve been working out a 20ft container ‘on the land’ while we build our dream home.

Having fallen in love with a barn 3 years ago when arriving back in Cornwall from Scotland, we began the journey developing a 3 acre site into a vision for homeschooling children, growing food and bringing calm and intention to our lives. The hilarity of it all is we have been challenged beyond recognition and although we remain steadfast and content, the marathon is a marathon all the same. I am learning that less is more. Our barn project is really taking shape. We have taken the deep dive into taking everything on all at once these last few years. Challenging, rewarding, character building ! It's such a joy watching the children get stuck in alongside the team. We live in a wonderful tiny-home in the back field, and focus all our attention on the growing forest school, The Meadow, growing our own food and building an intentional, sustainable and economical home with community based input and areas developed for growth, children and healing. Everything is a creative endeavour and to build a life of art is our mission. Our vision for the forest school on our land where our children can immerse in nature and wilderness when we are home and not travelling is coming together. Lead by the wonderful Lani, The Meadow is now up and running and welcoming children to join us.

The studio

In the studio, this year saw the completion of a special commission. The Suján Life commissioned me to paint a piece for their Jawai camp, following our magic stay there last year — and this year, all the reference gathered from that extraordinary landscape has finally been laid to canvas.

Travelling and spending time in India is enriching for me as an artist but mostly now because I get the privilege of watching my babies learn from another culture so different from our own.

The Elephants of Chiawa

Following on from the Jawai commission and to commemorate the acquisition of Chiawa Safaris by The Sujan Life, the wonderful Anjali Singh, owner and creative director of Sujan ask me to bring to life the elephants of the emerald forest that is the Lower Zambezi.

Wild dogs of the Lower Zambezi

Following the wonderful Chiawa commission earlier this year celebrating the Lower Zambezi and celebrating Elephants, I reached into another piece based on the same area and the family dynamics and unity of Painted dogs. An absolute favourite subject of mine. Character rich, powerful as a collective and critically endangered.

Travel

This past stretch has seen us scattered across some of our favourite places on earth. Matt has been away guiding in Costa Rica, Botswana and Zambia — one of his groups was especially close to my heart, as it included my mother and some of our longest-standing, dearest friends.

As a family, we also spent a month with dear friends in the Okavango Delta. Watching our children experience true wilderness, surrounded by wonderful, close friends, was an absolute joy — the kind of memory-making we treasure most. It also reminded me of the rare gift of painting true wilderness in the wilderness itself, brush in hand with the Delta right in front of me.

Cornwall, our home

This year has also seen us explore a little closer to home. I feel utterly privileged to live in such a beautiful area with true wilderness on our door step and we have made a concerted effort to explore that as a family.

Ampney Park

An Exhibition in collaboration with DSWF

Earlier in the year we exhibited at Ampney Park, Cotswolds, in collaboration with David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation. Paintings below were on show for one night, and 50% of all paintings sold in the collection went to Wildlife conservation.

Eden Project & Explorers Against Extinction

Exhibition

I was thrilled and honoured to be part of an exhibition very close to home, here in Cornwall at the Eden Project.

Extinction: Renewal, Art of a Living Planet — an exhibition from the conservation charity Explorers Against Extinction, bringing together more than 35 artists from around the globe. It's a journey through humanity's relationship with the natural world, from prehistoric times to the present day and into what lies ahead.

This exhibition allowed me to paint the very relationships I find so confronting and challenging in our human story. Why we honour some animals, and ensalve animals, ultimately leading to our demise as an intellectually and spiritually wealthy species.

This is a series I am hoping to develop more in time, and allows me the therapeutic pathway to making sense of a time so interconnected yet individualised.

News of exciting new ventures and creative roads…

I will be painting my third Live performance piece at the Dorchester Hotel (London) on the 27th November. It is part of the annual fundraiser for the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation - DSWF - my family’s legacy and continued mission to help endangered species in the wild. My mother once ran it, my sister currently does, and as a passionate believer that women have a powerful place and destiny in the leadership of this world, I support them in their tireless efforts how I can. Safariki

Earlier in the year a very exciting collaboration came to light with the wonderful Safariki and a collection of organic cotton scarfs. For more info on the scarfs and how to purchase one of your own. click the link in the “Safariki” heading.

"We have today to learn to get back into accord with the wisdom of nature and realize again our brotherhood with the animals and with the water and the sea." - Joseph Campbell

This is a limited edition of 100. Each print sale will see 20% of the proceeds go to David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation. for their work protecting these limitless and invaluable ecosystems and the animals that belong there.
